L04: Applying cinematic lighting techniques

Here I am setting up the tripod and camera so that I can set specific measurements based on the lighting outside when we leave, this allows me to have my settings almost ready for shooting rather than taking more time setting up when meeting up with the artist. I am using a Canon 500D set to manual, this allows me to bring the scene into focus by hand, I also used an aperture of f/1.4 to let more light pass through and an auto iso setting from the camera.

Here are two clips from my short film/documentary where I only used natural lighting produced from sunlight while being outside.

Here are two clips from my short film/documentary where I used practice lighting from either lamps or the lights from the ceiling.

L03: Floor Plans

Here I have made a flood plan for Yusuf Yellows bedroom as I know him as a friend I know exactly how his room looks. This helps me while planning the shooting and also with lighting. I will be using ambient lighting made from the lamp in his bedroom as we will be shooting at night.

L03: Script

The Yellow Tape

Yusuf Yellow: Started writing poetry and erm, and from then on met some people like met some rappers while I was out in LA for a while and erm, they kind of got me on some hip-hop I guess and just free styling together, writing together and it kind of just naturally went from writing poetry to hip-hop and I've always loved hip hop so it was something that naturally worked quite nicely.

Question 2: What do you like about the Sheffield scene?

Yusuf Yellow: Unity man, like everyone that is doing it just seems to show a love to everyone else that's trying hard so yeah, just everyone uniting and working together to make good music and help each other man, that's what I love about the Sheffield scene definitely.

Question 3: If you could change one thing about the scene what would it be?

Yusuf Yellow: I don't know man, maybe more promotion put into hip hop events you know, it seems like everything, well not everything but. A majority of the focus is around indie and rock and the crowds at them sort of shows are always huge because there's so much promotion and focus behind it, which is great but it would be great to see that sort of promotion be put in to hip hop too you know...

Question 4: Where do you see yourself in the future?

Yusuf Yellow: Hopefully somewhere much further than I am now you know, but I don't know man you never know what's gonna happen really, but I like to hope if I put in hard work now then by next year it should have paid off some how, you know. Even if its just learning to become a better producer, but yeah just get somewhere from the hardworking I'm putting in.

Question 5: Have you got any hobbies?

Yusuf Yellow: I like making music, I like skating. Skating is kinda fun, nothing really, I don't know. Nothing too crazy, I like drinking tea, think I might be addicted to biscuits but I don't know, I think that's about it to be honest.

LO2: Explain the different lighting settings that may be used to record footage.

There are many lightings that can be used in recording footage, be that film or photography. Such as;
Key Lighting, Fill Lighting, Back Lighting, Side Lighting, Practical Light, Hard Lighting, Soft Lighting, Bounce Lighting, High Key, Low Key, Motivated Lighting, Ambient Lighting. All of these lightings are useful depending on what is being shot, all of them will be taken into account before production as lighting has an affect on things such as atmosphere, emotion, meaning and so on. All of these lightings have a specific purpose.

Key lighting is the strongest visible light in the photo or video, fill lighting is used to removed dark areas that key lighting creates. Backlighting is used to created a 3D scene and also used in a three point lighting setup. Side lighting is lighting from the side. Practical lighting is light produced from regular sources such as lamps, TVs, candles etc. Bounce lighting is used to bounce lighting to create a stonier light source to the main focal point in a scene or photograph.

Soft lighting is used to create a soft image, making the image or video light subtle, this also means that the scene or image won't be accompanied with any shadows. Hard lighting is either sunlight or a strong light for cinematic use as it is powerful. High key lighting is used to created a bright scene just before it becomes overexpose. Low key lighting is used to create a main focal point more eye catching with lighting only being applied to that one thing in the scene, also creating shadows. Motivated lighting is used to create a natural looking light source with equipment. Ambient lighting is used to make a scene look similar to how we would see it in real life.

L01: Describe how to use camera equipment
